![]() People put sunflower seeds in their bird feeders and although it is high in nutrients, it has a low quantity of carotenoids which results in a healthy cardinal with pale feathers. The opposite happens with sunflower seeds. It signifies that these birds will be bright red but still won’t be healthy. This honeysuckle has high carotenoids but is low in nutrients and minerals. In urban areas particularly, people plant non-native Amur honeysuckle which cardinals like to eat. The correlation between color and fitness isn’t necessarily true. Male cardinals which have a dull shade of feathers signify weakness and inability to provide good food and territory to their young. When a male cardinal is bright red that means he has access to good food which is rich in nutrients and carotenoids.įemale cardinals consider them fit and healthy and believe that they will be able to provide them and their young with nutritious food.īright red cardinals also have the capability of holding a larger and better territory and even provide more parental care. ![]() The male cardinals which have brighter feathers are considered better mates than those with paler ones. The female cardinals choose their mate depending on the color of their feathers. On the contrary, food that is rich in carotenoids will make their feathers brighter. If they eat food with a lower amount of carotenoids then the cardinal’s color begins to pale and fade. The color vibrancy of these red cardinals depends completely on their diet. The already existing feathers on the cardinals are not influenced, only the new ones are. The new feathers that grow on the cardinals are then brighter and richer in color. When this food metabolizes, it goes through the liver and the bloodstream which then deposits it to the growing feather follicles. They eat parts of plants such as fruits or seeds which are rich in carotenoid pigment. The northern cardinals get their red coloring from carotenoids. These three pigments, along with the structural properties of birds, are how birds get their colors. It makes many colors like red, pink, and green. This pigment is created when amino acids are modified. Porphyrins are rarer than the other two and can only be found in a handful of bird species. Melanin also helps feathers remain in good shape as it makes them sturdier and stronger. It makes various colors ranging from black to brown and even reddish browns. Melanin is also found in humans and is responsible for our skin and hair color. ![]() They can also combine with melanin to make beautiful colors like olive green. Carotenoids make colors like red, orange, or bright yellow. These are made by plants and can be transferred to birds by eating plants or by consuming another creature that ate plants. This substance can be divided into three groups: carotenoids, melanin, and porphyrins. On the other hand, pigments are present in both plants and animals. This mostly makes the blue or iridescence color in birds. The structural properties basically reflect or scatter light in such a way that it gives colors to the feathers. When these two combine, they can create various new colors. The structural properties and pigments are responsible for creating color in bird feathers. ![]() The primary color that cardinals can be found in include red for male cardinals and grey-brown for female cardinals. You will learn about which cardinals exist in reality and which cardinals exist only in rumor. Personally, I have my own palette set up in terms of values – the lightest color on the right and the darkest on the left. This post will explore the different colors of cardinals and how they get their specific colors. You can choose whether you set up your palette with a warm/cool color layout or a light/ dark value palette. There is a lot learned when just mixing colors together and putting them into a chart. That is great that you are working on making a color chart. You could also just put a drop of linseed oil on each color to slow down the drying process. You can also cover the paints on your palette with plastic seran wrap. However, when working with watercolor I also just use water and a damp cloth when I have rags available to use! When working with oils and want to save some paint there are a couple of options – one is to use something called a “palette garage”. I paint mostly with oil paints so I use murphy’s oil soap for cleaning brushes – it works incredibly well. Hi John, Thank you for sharing and for your kind words. ![]()
